Cover Letter
To whom it may concern,
My name is Khari Walser, and I am a costume designer with five years of professional fashion design experience, a BFA in fashion design, and a minor in drama from Syracuse University. I am skilled in design, conceptualization, pattern making, garment construction, draping, sketching, character analysis, and script analysis. My experience as a costume designer started at Syracuse University serving as the costume designer for the student led organization First Year Players from 2015 to 2017. While in this position I conceptualized costumes for the entire cast along with occasional costume construction, budgeting, and the purchasing of costume pieces. During shows I also acted as a dresser. I was also responsible for maintaining, organizing, and eventually striking the costumes for productions.
Following college, I worked as a wardrobe assistant for two consecutive productions at Theatre for a New Audience in Fort Greene, Brooklyn where I assisted the wardrobe supervisor in costume upkeep, organization, and laundry throughout tech week and the run of the show. I am now serving as the costume designer for Gallery Players’ production of Fences by August Wilson where I am tasked with collaborating with the director to conceptualize and create the costumes for all characters. Along with that, I am responsible for doing all costume creation, shopping, and organization making sure that all cast members have appropriate costume pieces that are well kept and bring their characters to life. Being a part of a small team of creatives I will be assisting with dressing and changes during tech week and the length of the production and at the end striking all costumes and returning them to the theaters costume shop. I am a designer that is devoted to interpreting the written word through dress and bringing characters to life not just through the director’s point of view but my own as well. I utilize all skills at my disposal to create a well thought out and stunning show. I hope to have the opportunity to bring my skill set to your production along with my personable and fun attitude. I look forward to collaboration with others that I work with!
Sincerely,
Khari Walser
